Some days, running feels like freedom. Some days, it feels like therapy. And then there are days like today — where I’m running on nothing but fumes, stubbornness, and the promise I made to myself.
It’s not my legs that struggle on days like this. It’s my heart. It’s my spirit. It’s the part of me that usually shows up ready to fight… but decided to hit snooze instead.
There’s a special kind of heaviness that comes with running when you’re emotionally drained. When your mind is loud. When your motivation is missing. When you’re not chasing a runner’s high — you’re just trying to keep a commitment to yourself.

But here’s the truth I’m learning, one tired mile at a time:
The days I run on empty are the days that fill me the most.
Not with energy. Not with excitement. But with proof — proof that I can keep going even when the spark isn’t there.
Today wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t fast. It wasn’t inspiring.
But it was done. And sometimes, that’s the victory.
Every damn mile counts… even the ones powered by nothing but grit.
If you’ve ever run on empty — physically, mentally, or emotionally — I’d love to hear your story and how you push through.
This probably makes me a Bad Person, but I buy a doughnut on the way to my run course every day. There’s a store that’s an easy right turn to get to, and I eat it on the way to the start line. I find that when I’m drinking my morning coffee I almost never want to go, but I ALWAYS need that stupid doughnut, and it’s enough to get me out the door. Powered by nothing but grit is hard. Powered by a maple long john is easy.

Gary, if loving a pre‑run doughnut is wrong, I don’t want either of us to be right. Doughnuts are divine and absolutely a valid fuel choice. I rarely have one now because they go straight to my thighs, but I love your dedication to the routine and knowing exactly what motivates you to power through. I’ll share that I once ran a Doughnut 5K where you had to eat one before taking off and at every mile — and you literally couldn’t progress until you finished it. Best run ever!
